An exciting new initiative to provide a safe place for young people to hang out and meet with friends opens on Monday 3rd June when local youth charity Young Melksham open up The Canberra Centre with their new Youth Café.
The Youth Café, which will be free for young people to attend, will be open every Monday and Wednesday between 3pm and 6pm during term time and will provide a safe space to hang out after school.
Youth Work Manager Gemma Connolly commented, “We are so excited to be starting this project. The Canberra Centre every Monday and Wednesday afternoon and we are looking forward to welcoming young people in, to have a chat, play pool or even use our computers to get on with some homework!
“During the afternoon our café will be opening selling hot and cold snacks and there will always be youth workers on hand to chat too if someone wanted.”
The initiative has been part funded by the Melksham Area Board through their Local Youth Network funding. Chair of the Board of Trustees of Young Melksham Jon Hubbard commented, “We are very grateful to the Area Board for helping to make this project possible. Their funding means that we can open the youth centre and provide a safe space for young people to drop in, have a chat and a catch up.
“We are hoping that by opening up the centre in this way we can encourage more people to come and see what we do here, but also to offer a venue for young people to come to, not only to socialise but also to undertake any group work that they may be doing but also for study or to speak to someone about any challenges they have.”
Vice-Chairman of the Area Board, Cllr Jonathon Seed, commented “I’m really pleased that we have been able to support this project. Our funding is all about providing positive activities for young people and we applaud this great initiative. I hope that we can continue to work with Young Melksham to help make it sustainable for the future.”
